I wish I could say the weeks are flying by but there not! I'm pretty sure it would be hard to find any athletes that doesn't feel this way. For one reason or another training weeks just seem to drag on...and on. Maybe its the anticipation of the coming season or maybe its because our days are filled with small details that will give us that extra edge, either way the weeks leading up the first event of the season seem to drag on forever! Don't get me wrong here, I'm not complaining about doing the work. Personally I can't wait to see how my hard work in the summer is going to stack up against the competition. Over the last 4 years I have come to understand why we do so much pre-season training. We do so many runs in the pre-season so that we become "sliding dumb." Its not as simple as you may think! Being dumb takes alot of hard work. One of the things about speed sports that most people don't understand is that most of what we do is hardwired into our bodies and minds. If your shooting down the track at 150 km/h and you decide to think about how to drive a corner, your already 3 corners down and probably suffering from ice burn on your butt! So by doing so much training in the pre-season we are actually just programing ourselves to react to situations without thinking. All the science aside, the anticipation for the upcoming season is killing me!
