Canadian John Fennell Wins Gold at Junior Luge World Cup

Fennell claims second gold and third medal in as many races this year

CALGARY—Canada’s John Fennell extended his medal-winning streak to three after winning the gold medal at the Junior Luge World Cup in Calgary on Friday night.

The 16-year-old Fennell, who followed up a season-opening victory with a silver medal performance, defended his home track at Canada Olympic Park after clocking a winning two-run time of 1:30.542 in the youth division.

Austria’s Michael Mayer was second at 1:30.710, while Tucker West, of the United States, grabbed the bronze with a time of 1:30.746.

Fennell was joined in the top-10 by three other Calgary-based Canadians. Mictchel Malyk, who won silver and gold in the first two races, narrowly missed the podium in fourth at 1:30.848. Tim Stone was sixth at 1:31.523, while Brian Marriott slid into eighth spot with a time of 1:31.975. Evan Wildman piloted the final Canadian sled to 13th (1:35.258).

Two Canadians hit thetrack in the junior category. Justin Tobin was the top Canuck with a time of 1:38.637, while Taylor Donegan finished 17th (1:39.701).

Germany’s Florian Bertes grabbed the gold in the third junior men’s race of the year after crossing the finish line in a time of 1:35.499. Italy’s Emanuel Rieder settled for the silver medal at 1:35.570, while Germany’s Chris Eissler locked up the bronze after stopping the clock at 1:35.912.
